Role Overview: 

Copy Editor’s main duties are to create Contract Information Books, Revise contract documents, evaluate designers based on their timeliness and accuracy of submitted documents. This position is critical to construction contracts and successful letting process by timely creating of Contract Information Books, processing of revisions among other tasks.

 

Salary

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $42,900.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience. 

 

Location

This position is located in INDOT’s Central Office, Indianapolis.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Research and compile information on specific aspects of the program such as procedures, needs and policies.
  • Answer customer questions about program policies and procedures.
  • Establish, organize, and maintain current and historical files related to the program.
  • Assist in the preparation of program reports, develop applications, prepare budget allocations and/or purchasing of consultative services.
  • Maintain, monitor, and order program assets.
  • Assist supervisor in the development and planning of overall program and its role in the functioning of the agency.
  • Schedule, prepare, and disseminate all program related training materials.

The Copy Editor position is responsible for creating INDOT contract letting documents for highway and bridge projects.

  • Resolve obstacles and challenges while creating contract letting documents.
  • Decide and confirm which special provisions are essential to include in the contract letting document.
  • Communicate with all stakeholders to find reasonable resolutions and to validate the contract letting material before advertising on the INDOT website.
  • Respond to Consultant and Project Managers to clarify their questions.
  • Monitor the standards, specifications, and provisions to ensure current policy and best practices are utilized.
  • Evaluate the performance of consultants to increase efficiencies and effectiveness of the contract letting material completion process.
  • Train new staff (copy editors) on policies and procedures

  • Specialized knowledge of program area including pertinent rules and regulations.
  • Specialized knowledge of applicable legislation, guidelines, agency policy and professional standards and practices.
  • Ability to research, analyze, and compile specific topics related to program area.
  • Ability to communicate effectively. 
  • Ability to operate effectively in a group decision-making process.
  • Tact in dealing with other agency personnel and the public.
  • Specialized knowledge of accounting and budgeting.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
